FFF - Pajama Party

Well I know this doesn't look like the typical Pajama Party, but this was what our Pajama party looked like last night in the ER. Karaline went roller skating with some friends of ours and i just had this gut feeling when I sent her that it wasn't a good thing. John, Kollin, Karson, Kemry, and I were on a walk through our neighborhood (Karly was at a friend's house too) when I got a frantic call from the mom. She was sure it was broken and Karaline was crying for me and she didn't know what to do. We threw little Karson on John's back and started RUNNING back to our house and they nearly had her at our house by the time we got back. When I saw it I thought, "WOW, that doesn't look bad at all'" It wasn't swollen and was slightly bruised, but Karaline was in so much pain I knew it was something. we went on to the ER, and it was. It is a green stick fracture. She caught herself on the way down and "compressed" both her radius and ulna near her wrist. She is splinted tonight and will get a cast tomorrow at the orthopedic surgeon's office. Believe it or not, this is our first Cash family fracture (and on our MOST cautious, careful child)! We're experts on x-rays and sprains, but no broken bones until last night.
~~~~~
This morning we met with the orthopedic surgeon for the cast. She chose green, her favorite color. :) She felt a LOT better this morning than she did last night.
Here's my sweet girl faking a smile...it was really starting to hurt her without her splint and sling.
Who would think this is broken? It is barely swollen, and you can hardly see the bruise.
Then came the casting
It's burning up inside mom mom! Then came the cool green. :)
That's it....no getting it wet for 4-6 weeks. They had many reasons they wouldn't do a waterproof cast. We are a water-loving family, so this is going to be HARD. If anyone has any tips on ways to keep this thing dry for the pool, lake, ocean, tub, pleeeeeeease let me know! :)
Oh, I am so sorry Karaline broke her arm! She looks like she was quite brave during the whole experience!
One of my guys broke his arm when he was 3. Bathing was the hardest part! We wrapped his arm with a towel and then put a plastic grocery bag over it - but there is probably a much easier way! ;)
Praying that Karaline feels better soon!
Oh my, poor Karaline! She looks like she was a trooper though! She's right, too, the green cast is very cool! I have absolutely no ideas for you as far as how to keep it dry (I'd be stumped on that, too), but let me know how you manage it cause with my four crazy kiddos I'm sure that at some point in our future we may have to deal with this, too...but I surely hope not! I hope Miss Karaline is fully healed and recovered very very soon!
Poor little thing! That won't be any fun this summer when she can't get it wet. :( I like the green! Hopefully she'll get lots of attention from it and she'll like that, right?
Poor Karaline! We have had our share of broken bones lately... so I can tell you what worked for Bug for baths/showers even though it would probably not be good for big water days... she is just going to have to be designated "Life Guard" and hope nobody needs her to jum pin!
We used a big gallon ziploc and then the Glad press & seal... I used a rubber band to hold the baggie closed up above the cast and the press n seal around that to "hold it" to the arm. It is not 100% water tight, but worked for us. I wonder if a medical supply place may have some new fangled thing to help keep it dry?
Glad she is feeling better... that is no fun! I always wanted a broken bone as a kid though... wanted those autographs on my cast! Never got one though but my kids have!
Poor thing, hope she feels better soon. My daughter broke her arm last June, and had her cast one for 4 days, when she managed to pull it off. Had to go and have it redone.
As a childrens nurse and mother the only thing that will keep it dry is to put a plastic bag over it, and seal it up with duct tape/masking tape or something like that. Make sure that you roll the tape around a few times and actually stick it to the skin, not just around the plastic. Wont work for swimming, but will be okay for bathing or probably running through a sprinkler or something like that. Word of warning: If it does get wet, the cotton wool part underneath STINKS real bad!
Oh Kelly! I feel your pain (no pun intended)!! My son broke his arm last August (1st week back to school). He fell off the monkey bars and broke it just above the elbow. He ended up needing surgery to place pins in there and he was casted for about 8 weeks. We used a big trash bag and put a rubber band at the top and then tied the ends of the bag closed. We had him sit in the tub so his left arm could rest on the edge of the tub and I washed his hair for him. He never did get it wet so I guess it worked!
Give Karaline a big hug for us!
Poor Karaline! I hope she is feeling better soon and the 4 - 6 weeks go by really fast. Maybe she needs a new pair of pajamas to make her feel better! Hee! Hee! You were right, Bella's dot pajamas, heart pajamas and the crop pajamas are all Hannas! :)
Poor Karaline and her broken arm :( I don't think anyone ever looked so cute that was in so much pain. I hope you guys find a way to keep it dry so you can enjoy your summer to the fullest. I love that she chose green.....cool cast color!
Oh poor Karaline, She looks like she is so brave. And I love the green cast, good choice!! I had the same break last summer when I was thrown from a horse. I hate to tell you but I never came up with a water tight seal. We had just brought Luke home and I did get really good at one handed diaper changes.
Give her hugs from us!!
Thank you for the comment on my blog. Sorry to hear Miss Karaline broke her arm. I will be praying for a quick recovery!
You have a beautiful family!!!
I didn't read through all of your comments so this may be a repeat but just thought of another thing...
My son's arm became unbearably itchy inside the cast. The surgeon suggested using a hairdryer on the cool setting and blowing air inside the cast. We had it plugged in all the time and it was within my son's reach so he could use it whenever he needed to. I have heard that sprinkling powder inside the cast works well for the itch too. We couldn't do that because there was an open wound from the surgery and it could become infected from the powder. But since Karaline doesn't have any open wound, you may try that as well.
Just in time for summer, oh what fun!! I hope the time flies by for you all!!!
When my nephew broke his arm they used a garbage bag when he showered and so forth...
Good Luck!!!
Awwww. She looks so sweet. Your kids are beautiful!
I bought a cast cover.... it slips over it... not perfect, but for showers and such, the ONLY way to keep it remotely dry... and you DO not want to smell that thing WET! YUCK!
Let us know how she is doing!
